Biographical Sketch

Max Stern was born in 1904 in München-Gladbach, Germany, the youngest child of Julius Stern and Selma Heilbron. His first exposure to art was at the Galerie Julius Stern, a business started by his father in Düsseldorf in 1913. Stern went on to study art history at universities in Germany, France, and Austria and obtained a Ph.D. from the University of Bonn in 1928. After completing his doctorate, Stern joined the Galerie Stern as manager and later assumed ownership of the business when his father died in October 1934. In late 1937, responding to the growing threat of Nazism in Germany, Stern liquidated the Galerie Stern's inventory and moved to London, where he joined his sister, Hedi, and a former associate from Düsseldorf, Cornelis J.W. van de Wetering, at West's Galleries Limited. Stern's work at the London gallery was interrupted a few years later with the onset of the Second World War and his internment as a civilian alien in a refugee camp on the Isle of Man. After being briefly detained on the Isle of Man, Stern was granted permission to immigrate to Canada, where he spent almost two years in internment camps near Fredericton, New Brunswick and Sherbrooke, Quebec. Following his release in 1942, Stern moved to Montreal and soon after joined Rose Millman at the Dominion Gallery of Fine Art as managing director. In 1946, Stern married Iris Westerberg from Malmö, Sweden and the following year he became the sole proprietor of the Dominion Gallery in partnership with Iris. Under Stern's direction, the Dominion Gallery exhibited and sold both contemporary Canadian and European art and eventually became one of the most successful commercial art galleries in Canada. As well as developing the Dominion Gallery, Stern assembled a prestigious private art collection that consisted mainly of paintings and sculptures by contemporary Canadian and European artists. A large number of these works were eventually donated to Canadian museums, most notably the Agnes Etherington Art Centre in Kingston, the Edmonton Art Gallery in Edmonton, the McMichael Canadian Collection in Kleinburg, Ontario, and the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and Musée d'art contemporain in Montreal. For his many contributions in promoting art appreciation in Canada, Stern received the Order of Canada in 1984 and an honorary doctorate from Concordia University in 1985. Max Stern died in Paris in 1987.
