Biographical Sketch

Ilse Bing Wolff was born on March 23, 1899 in Frankfurt, Germany. She studied mathematics and art history at universities in Frankfurt and Vienna from 1920 until 1929 and in 1928 began using a camera to illustrate her dissertation on the German architect Friedrich Gilly (1772-1800). The following year Bing was hired to create picture essays for the weekly supplement of a Frankfurt newspaper, becoming one of the few women to work in photojournalism at the time. After abandoning her studies in the summer of 1929, Bing moved to Paris, where she worked as a freelance press, fashion, portrait, and documentary photographer, combining her skill as a photographer with a unique artistic vision. Bing was one of the first professional photographers in Paris in the 1930s to work with the small format Leica camera. She was also among the first to use an electronic flash, solarization, and to photograph at night. Her work was included in all major Parisian exhibitions, including the first modern photography exhibition held at the Louvre in 1936. The following year, Bing's work was part of the exhibition "Photography 1839-1937" at the Museum of Modern Art, New York.

In 1937, Bing married the pianist and musicologist, Konrad Wolff. As German Jews, Bing and her husband were interned as enemy aliens by the Vichy government in 1940 and upon their release immigrated to the United States (1941). Bing became an American citizen in 1946. In 1948, she began to work with the larger format Rolleiflex camera and by 1957 had started working exclusively in colour. In 1959, Bing gave up photography for poetry, drawing, painting, and collage. Bing died in New York City on March 10, 1998. Her works are in the collections of institutions in the United States, Europe, and Canada, including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Museum Folkwang, Essen, Germany, and the National Gallery of Canada.
