Masterpiece in Focus: Thomas Couture in the Studio

01 Feb 2014 - 08 Jun 2014

Gallery C218

Thomas Couture (1815–1879) was one of the most celebrated painters in Paris during his lifetime and was renowned for his bold technique and sensational subject matter. In the early twentieth century, however, his art historical reputation waned in favour of more modern tendencies. His Supper at the Maison d’Or also known as Each Party has its Ending has spent decades in storage since it was donated to the Vancouver Art Gallery, due to the condition of the painting and damage to its original frame. It is now on public display. This exhibition will focus on Couture’s drawing and painting techniques, as well as allowing a behind-the-scenes look at the recent treatment of the painting. As such, it will give insight into the secrets of the studio, both in terms of the painting’s creation and restoration.
