Public Groups

The following activities are open to the public as well as members of the National Gallery of Canada. Lectures are given every other Wednesday in the Auditorium. Session membership and single session tickets are available at the information desk for each the Wednesday Morning Study Group and Les Mercredis culturels. Please contact the Volunteers’ office for details and fees.

Wednesday Morning Study Group

The theme of this English-only series for 2012-2013 is Diversity in Art. It offers an opportunity to be part of a stimulating professional environment that showcases the diversity of artists and their practices, and the diversity of art and architecture. Lectures are given every second Wednesday at 10:15 am in the Auditorium. Click here to view this year’s schedule.

Les Mercredis culturels

This French-only series features notable professional speakers on the arts on a wide range of topics. Lectures are given every Wednesday at 2 pm in the auditorium or lecture hall of the NGC. Click here to view this year’s schedule.

The following activities are restricted to Members of the National Gallery of Canada. Please contact the Volunteers’ office for details and fees.

Third Thursday Study Group

Members of this group are interested in art and want to improve their understanding of the art of various periods. Participants research and present illustrated talks in an informal setting, according to a pre-determined topic. The 2012-13 topic is “Inuit and First Nations”. The group meets from September to May, in a seminar room at the Gallery. Group is limited to 25 members.

Know Your Gallery

Similar to the Third Thursday Study Group, Know Your Gallery invites working art lovers at 1:30 pm on the third Saturday of each month in a seminar room at the Gallery. Works in the collection are discussed and then visited in the galleries. Group is limited to 25 members.

Art in View

This program focuses on art and the artist and on the functions of the Gallery in acquisitions, conservation and the exhibition of works of art. Lecturers are experienced members of the arts community. Meetings are arranged in series of six consecutive weekly events, each with a lecture and a related Gallery visit, in both the Spring and the Fall. Members can choose a Wednesday or a Thursday series. Group is limited to 30 members.

Artists and Artisans Study Group

The Artists and Artisans Study Group provides the opportunity to visit the studios of local artists and study their work. The group plans the program of visits, then individual members organize specific visits. Group is limited to 30 members.
