Publication National Gallery of Canada Review V gets the support of the renowned Donald and Beth Sobey Chief Curator's Research Endowment

Ottawa - January 11, 2007

The National Gallery of Canada and its Foundation are pleased to announce the release of the annual research publication, National Gallery of Canada Review V, made possible through the generous support of the Donald and Beth Sobey Chief Curator's Research Endowment. This bilingual journal is an incomparable research tool for Canada as well as the international artistic community. It publishes the investigations of scholars into all aspects of our rich collections, with Canadian and non-Canadian subjects treated in equal measure.

It was in 2003, that the entrepreneur and collector of Canadian art from Stellarton, Nova Scotia, Donald Sobey, donated an impressive $1 million gift, thereby creating the Donald and Beth Sobey Chief Curator's Research Endowment. Under the guidance of the Gallery's Chief Curator, Dr. David Franklin, this fund gives the National Gallery the opportunity to conduct and publish scholarly research of national and international scope.

Since the creation of the NGC Foundation in 1997, Donald and Beth Sobey have been generous in their time and their financial support. Mr. Sobey is currently the Chairman of the NGC's Board of Trustees, as well as a member of the NGC Foundation's Board of Directors. "The permanent record of what we leave for posterity is really one of our most important activities at the Gallery, which has many tangible and intangible benefits, including sharing our knowledge and research with museums across the country and worldwide", declared Dr. David Franklin.

"Along with its ability to provide leadership and support to galleries across the country, the National Gallery of Canada is already one of the most important institutions in the world - among the top ten", Donald Sobey proudly proclaimed. "And I believe that curators contribute to the Gallery in a fundamental way. I want to be part of that facet of the Gallery's operation because, in my view, the research accomplished on a daily basis provides knowledge on the world of arts."

"We are tremendously grateful for Donald and Beth Sobey's enduring support of the Gallery and its Foundation", declared Marie Claire Morin, President and CEO of the Foundation. "This fund continues to empower the Gallery to meet its objective to further curatorial research and publishing."

National Gallery of Canada Review V is the second publication made possible with the Donald and Beth Sobey Chief Curator's Research Endowment and is on sale at the Gallery's Bookstore.
